Step-By-Step GA4 Migration

Step 1: Create GA4 Account
- Sign in to your existing Universal Analytics
- Go to Admin –> Property –> GA4 Setup Assistant
- Select “Get Started” & follow instructions

Step 2: Place Container Code On Site
The details of this step vary by each site hosting platform – look for a Google plugin or a place to place custom code in the global site header. Once Google Tag Manager is placed on the site, all other code can be added within the Tag Manager platform, minimizing the amount of code the on each page and maximizing page load speed.
Step 3: Setup On-Site Tracking
- Use Google Tag Manager to set the base code from your new GA4 property and any active ad serving platforms (Google, Meta, etc.) to load on every page on your site
- Setup additional event triggers for high-value site actions
Although Google Tag Manager is designed for marketers with no technical coding background, there can be some complexity to setting up some conversions. The Tag Manager Help Center is a great resource, and you can verify that things are firing correctly with the container preview tool.
Tip: in addition to setting up tracking for core conversions like form fills and phone calls, we recommend thinking about secondary on-site events that may indicate that you are reaching the right users, such as video completion events and clicks to key pages.
